Welcome to our first installment of Storage Q&A, a new
blog series where we answer the questions we see asked the most. These
questions may seem all over the place, but they will all be related to storage
in some way. We hope we can help clear up any confusion people may have about
storage norms and strategies.
A 3x5 storage unit is 3 feet wide and 5 feet deep. The door
to the space will be close to 3 feet wide, and in some cases may even be a hinged
swinging door as opposed to a roll-up.
Small furniture items like nightstands, end tables, and
small chair may fit comfortably in a 3x5 storage unit, with space left for stacked
boxes and totes. These sizes may be ideal for more transient demographics, like
young adults and college students that may move between semesters.
A 5x5 storage unit is 5 feet wide by 5 feet deep. The door
to the space will also usually be close to 5 feet wide.
A 5x10 storage unit is 5 feet wide by 10 feet deep. Because
the first number generally denotes the unit’s width, you can assume the door to
the space will be close to 5 feet wide.
Medium-sized furniture can generally fit in a 5x10, with
boxes and totes filling in the extra space. In terms of sofas and couches, as
long as it’s less than 10 feet long and 5 feet wide, it will fit. Much of the
time these units will be at least 8 feet tall, so some furniture items like
sofas, nightstands, or end tables can be stacked vertically to take better
advantage of the space.
A 10x10 storage unit is 10 feet wide by 10 feet deep. The door
to the space will also usually be close to 10 feet wide.
